In late October, law enforcement in Latin America asked the O.U.R. Ops Team to help them advance a case they had been stuck on. The authorities had received a report from a minor who was being raped and potentially trafficked by a man who lived near the national capital, but they could not get close without the suspect becoming suspicious. O.U.R. Operators were asked to confirm details about the suspect so that a warrant could be obtained. The operators were able to find out the requested information and share it with police, who within a week got the judicial orders in place to raid the suspect’s apartment. They found a lot of incriminating evidence, and the suspect was arrested. They are now furthering the investigation to determine whether the suspect was exploiting additional minors. The survivor who made the original report is being attended to by the host government's child protective services equivalent.

When “Mina” was 18, she finished her schooling in South Asia and was looking forward to the opportunity to study further. She came from a very poor family, so she was not sure what would be possible. One day, an extended family member offered “Mina” and her two younger sisters to come live in a neighboring city with more opportunity. The sisters were excited to go. This extended family member ran a hotel in the city. Soon after arriving, the three sisters were forced into sexual slavery. They were forced to sell themselves 10-20 times a day. Our partner’s undercover team received a tip about these girls and went to investigate. In conjunction with local law enforcement, one perpetrator was arrested and another is under investigation. They also rescued these girls from the hotel. Mina and her sisters are now receiving aftercare services including counseling, food, and medical support, funded and supported by O.U.R. at one of our partner aftercare homes.

Last Friday, two survivors flew home to West Africa. These two women had pursued an employment opportunity in the Mediterranean, but upon arrival, the employers turned on them and took their passports. These women, sadly, were abused and trafficked during the following weeks. These women escaped their situations, but because the traffickers had stolen their passports, they were put in prison for having no documents. As they spent weeks in prison leading up to the holidays, they were heartbroken they would not see their children for the holidays. O.U.R. Aftercare helps many women in this prison navigate the necessary processes and paperwork to be released. Fortunately, these women were successfully released at an earlier date than first expected. When one of the women first found out she was going to be able to make it home for the holidays, she said, “The song of freedom is the only gift I need.” She couldn’t wait to spend the holidays with her children singing songs of praise and joy. This story is an example of your donations in action. Thank you for helping reunite families and supporting survivors’ journeys across the world.

O.U.R. has partnered with Mission823 to serve children and youth in Ukraine who are at risk for being trafficked. Mission823 builds and operates homes for abandoned or rescued children in Ukraine to have a safe space to live, and receive education and psychological care. They also provide humanitarian relief to at-risk families and children in the community. They estimate that 15,000 children will age out of the orphanage system each year, and without support and opportunities, they can become targets of human trafficking. With O.U.R.’s support in October and November, Mission823 provided COVID-related humanitarian relief to 115 children. This included providing family support and distributing food to 53 impoverished families. In addition, O.U.R. was able to support 9 at-risk youth in one of the family homes. These 9 children love to serve with the Mission823 team at safe community outreach events. Prevention work is vital in the fight to end child trafficking and exploitation. We are grateful to support and empower organizations internationally who are best positioned to protect the children in their country.

49-year-old Ronald Williams distributed and received illegal child sexual abuse material by posing as a single mother on anonymous chat apps and the dark web. K9 ASCII, an O.U.R.-sponsored electronic detection dog in Colorado, assisted law enforcement on a search warrant during the investigation of Williams. Police found over 8,000 child exploitation images and videos on the suspect's devices. Williams was arrested on six counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, a Class 3 Felony. We are grateful for K9s like ASCII that work alongside law enforcement to find vital evidence that could help lead to the successful conviction of child sex predators. See link in bio to read the full article. O.U.R. supplies ESD K9s to qualified law enforcement agencies. As a desperate, loving mother, concerned for the well-being of her children, “Jamila” temporarily left West Africa to find better work in the Mediterranean. After working for a while in a safe place, Jamila was transferred to another place of work, where she was sadly, abused and trafficked. All she could think about was her children and if she would ever see them again. Jamila courageously escaped her traffickers, but had to live on the streets because she had no money and flights were shut down to her home country due to the pandemic. During all of this time, the children also wondered if they would ever see their mother again, and eventually believed she was probably dead. Their hearts were shattered, and they missed their mom. O.U.R aftercare partners found Jamila living on the streets. Working with her, our team was miraculously able to locate her children in West Africa. We were thrilled to inform her that the children, although very poor, were safe with family and attending school. We were also able to inform the children that their mom is alive and cannot wait to hug them again. As soon as it is possible, there will soon be the most beautiful reunion as O.U.R. Aftercare works to bring Jamila back home to her children.

In a recent operation in Southeast Asia, the O.U.R. Ops Team supported law enforcement in rescuing Amanda, a 16 year old girl. She was employed at a local karaoke bar, but she was forced to be sexually exploited by customers in local hotels. One night when she was dropped off at a local hotel, O.U.R. was able to help identify her and help her out of her situation. Amanda is now receiving survivor care and is beginning her healing process. Today we have a special update on 13-year-old Andrew, who was only six years old when he was kidnapped for the purpose of being trafficked in East Africa. He was badly injured by his trafficker, and was saved just before he died, but he was told he would never walk again due to the extent of the injury. O.U.R. Aftercare has followed Andrew’s healing journey with the incredible doctors and nurses who gave him his best chance to walk again. Andrew’s initial surgery in the U.S. happened in February of this year and was very successful. Since then, he has celebrated his birthday, made new friends, played outside, and is excelling in school! Recently, he had the opportunity to take horse riding lessons, which were graciously donated and arranged by @MetropolitanEquestrianTeam. O.U.R. collaborates with NGOs all around the nation to help serve children in the best way possible. We are excited to share more in the future about our partnership with MET and how we have been collaborating to develop an equine therapy program for survivors. While learning to ride the horse, Andrew’s infectious smile brightened the room around him. We are so inspired by his strength and hope for the future! See link in profile too see the full video.

Today on #HumanRightsDay, we have an opportunity to remember the importance of human rights as we work to recover from the effects of COVID-19 as a global community. Even through the pandemic, children have continued to be trafficked and exploited. Their fundamental human rights are violated by the predators and traffickers who seek to harm them. Earlier this year in Southeast Asia, O.U.R. Operators worked with law enforcement to go undercover and investigate a brothel suspected of selling children for sex. Their suspicions were verified when the house madam was eager to provide small children to our operators. This story is punctuated by the irony that the madam, believing our operators to be paying customers, provided them with face masks and hand sanitizer before giving them access to the unprotected children. These children are left vulnerable to atrocities that are arguably far more devastating than any virus could inflict. The O.U.R. Operators, along with law enforcement, were able to successfully free the children from the horrors of exploitation. They are now receiving proper aftercare. Children are not for sale.

K9 ASCII, sponsored by O.U.R., recently finished her training with Jordan Detection K9 and has been placed with her law enforcement handler Matt Beers in Colorado. We are excited to share more about her! ASCII is the abbreviation for AMERICAN STANDARD CODE for INFORMATION INTERCHANGE. Since K9 ASCII is trained to detect electronics, her handler thought it was a fitting name for her to have. Since getting started last month, K9 ASCII has already been on several search warrants. After completing a recent search warrant, Matt Beers shared with us, “We found several devices. I ran her through two bedrooms and she found 3 external hard drives and 1 computer that we would have missed. In the other bedroom she indicated on a box full of clothes in the closet. I was certain it was just clothes from it being briefly searched already, but I was wrong. There ended up being another laptop and external drive in the box. It was a great day for us!” Our trained K9s like ASCII are specially taught to sniff out hidden electronic devices during search warrants. These devices are routinely hidden by child predators in an attempt to hide sexually abusive and exploitative images of children from significant others and law enforcement. We feel so lucky to have ASCII and all of our other K9s to sniff out evidence to help prosecute child predators and move towards ending child exploitation! See link in profile for news story. THE BOY IN THE GREEN SHIRT PART 5/5 The offender loved to eat Burger King and would often talk about eating at a particular Burger King located in a local mall. For our final art lesson, I requested that we meet at that exact Burger King so I could buy him lunch. He was so excited. Just as we began our lesson, multiple plain-clothes officers entered from directly behind the offender and took him into custody, prior to him getting to enjoy his delicious Burger King flame-broiled Whopper. I doubt they’ll be serving Whoppers in prison anytime soon. Oh well….so close. Cheers. Please accept my deepest gratitude for the support the Southeast Asia team receives from everyone at O.U.R., the donors, board members, everyone. I’m left speechless regularly at the things that are being accomplished and the lives that are being affected and it’s all because of the support provided by all of you. 4 survivors flew safely home! These amazing women couldn’t wait to see their families again and be home for the holidays. They told us that they were dancing with joy as they got off the plane! These women were trafficked out of West Africa by false employment agencies, who took their passports and exploited them repeatedly upon arrival to the Middle East. After bravely escaping, they were put in prison because their traffickers had taken their passports, so they had no official documents with them. Thanks to our supporters, we were able to support these women in their journeys home. The O.U.R. Aftercare Team helped negotiate their release from prison and paid for their required COVID tests so they could prepare to fly home and see their families. We are very grateful for aftercare collaboration. We have been able to start a new program in West Africa with in-country experts to provide holistic aftercare services for survivors. These brave women have had a difficult journey. They were completely deceived, having no idea that exploitation and abuse awaited them when they landed in the Middle East. These survivors are warriors. We are so grateful to know them and be a part of their journey. They are incredibly strong and we are inspired by their hope and light.

"When I think of fruit, I think of cleanliness. That is what I am striving to have one day. When I am one day clean, I will have my kids back, and I will be free and will be able to move forward from the abuse I endured." "Anna" was very young when she was first trafficked and exploited in Central America. In time, she came across dangerous relationships and was introduced to drugs. She is continuing to progress on her healing journey, and O.U.R. Aftercare will always stand by her side. Anna's painting of an apple (featured above) is one of the pieces of artwork featured in our "Not For Sale" book, available only until TONIGHT at 11:59pm PT! THE BOY IN THE GREEN SHIRT PART 4/5 "Simon" is safe. He has been receiving aftercare support from O.U.R. and the local government. He’s no longer involved in acting or modeling. The O.U.R. Aftercare team keeps in close contact with Simon and his family to remind them that just because an investigation ends, O.U.R.’s support does not. The aftershocks of Simon’s case are ongoing. There have been multiple arrests related to the sexual abuse of the other children identified in Simon’s investigation. In total, over 50 young boys have been identified from the hundreds of thousands of photos and videos of child sexual abuse material which were seized after arrests and search warrants were executed to rescue Simon. I almost never write a “story from the field”. I prefer to do my work, write my reports, and support law enforcement and move on from one case to the next case. But in this instance, I want everyone involved with O.U.R. to know how proud I am to be a part of the Southeast Asia team and support law enforcement here. Lives are being changed here. "Linda" lived in a home full of fighting and drug abuse. At 13 years old, she was looking for a way out. A man contacted her on Facebook and Linda didn't mind the attention. He started grooming her online and soon he convinced her to run away with him. The night she decided to run away from home and meet him in person was when he took her to a truck stop and sold her virginity to a trucker. Linda never saw this man again. The trucker sold her along various truck stops along his route. One day, someone noticed Linda and the trucker and thought the situation looked suspicious. They called the police, who were able to quickly intervene and rescue Linda. She was soon safe in one of O.U.R.'s partnering aftercare homes. Linda said, "The stars represent the hope I held on to while I was trapped in a truck and trafficked across Central America. During my therapy sessions, I drew the stars that I remembered while I was still trapped in the dark, because it gave me something to look forward to at the end of the darkness. Those stars were the hope I knew was out there, but I didn't know exactly what it was." Linda's story is one of several others in our Not For Sale book. ‼️UPDATE ‼️We’ve seen an overwhelming amount of response this year for this book and have decided to make this a #GivingWeek! “Bella” was rescued from human trafficking at a very young age. After a few months in survivor care, Bella’s mother let their social worker know that she didn’t want her back anymore because of what she had been through, she felt it was just easier not to have her. The social worker immediately reached out to the O.U.R. Aftercare Team to ask them to keep Bella in their thoughts that day. This social worker needed the strength to tell Bella about her mother when she got home from school that day. The Aftercare Team thought about how to help Bella feel loved and extra special. It turned out that her birthday was coming up, so they decided to throw a birthday party for her! Bella enjoyed every minute of her birthday party. She spent most of it walking around to make sure everyone was fed. Just one hour into her party she said, “If birthdays are like this, I want to live to be 1,000.” Her joy was full that day. Bella’s story is just one of several inspiring stories in our Not For Sale book, available for today only. Visit ourrescue.org/notforsale (link in profile) to donate $39 and receive this exclusive book! Your donation can help provide more birthday parties for survivors like Bella.
