In March, five O.U.R. electronic storage device (ESD) detection K9s will graduate from training and be placed with police departments across the country. These ESD K9s are trained to sniff out electronic storage devices during search warrants in child exploitation cases. We work with Jordan Detection K9, who has now trained 20 O.U.R.-sponsored K9s for this purpose. “With over 50 of our dogs deployed across the nation, not a day goes by that we don't hear of one of these dogs assisting an investigator by locating devices that were missed by the human eye. It still amazes me that a tiny device can hold images that help investigators identify thousands of potential victims and get them on the path to recovery. I am proud and humbled to play a small part in this entire process.” - Todd Jordan, Owner and Chief Trainer at Jordan Detection K9 Tor, Iris, May, Bubba, and Luna will be deployed to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Ohio, and Minnesota. If one of these K9s is coming to your state, give them a shoutout below!

Operation Redención: Law enforcement in South America reported that they were able to arrest one predator and rescue one minor from sexual exploitation using undercover tools provided by O.U.R., which were essential in collecting evidence needed for prosecution. This is one of the many ways the O.U.R. Ops Team assists law enforcement in investigations.

We are proud to announce that O.U.R.’s Thailand Country Director “Art” has just received an outstanding achievement award from Thailand’s Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA). This award signifies personal sacrifice for the benefit of the Kingdom of Thailand. The award was received on behalf of O.U.R. for our assistance in anti-trafficking efforts. We were honored to attend this ceremony and we are grateful for all that these teams do to end human trafficking and child exploitation in Thailand.

When 22-year-old “Carolina” was looking for work in the Caribbean, she accepted a waitressing job offer at a local club. As she signed on for the job, they confiscated her passport - she was a refugee from a neighboring country. Her “employers” at the club were able to use this to threaten deportation and force her to work. They also used this as an excuse to sexually exploit her. Carolina was identified and freed by the police two years ago. However, during the pandemic, it was extremely difficult for Carolina to find work. She wanted to make sure she found a safe job. O.U.R. was connected with Carolina through our partners in the Caribbean. As the O.U.R. Aftercare Team got to know Carolina, they learned more about her hopes and dreams. Through a series of conversations, they also learned that her jaw was lopsided and was also experiencing chronic pain from the physical and sexual abuse she endured. Thanks to your donations, we were able to help Carolina receive the medical care she needs and support her on her path to finding a successful job. She has a strong desire to learn English, so O.U.R. provided her with a laptop and access to what she needs. The O.U.R. Aftercare Team also connected her with our partners at @mentorsinternational, which will provide her with the resources and training to be successful in the workplace. Carolina recently got a job with a cell phone company. She is working hard to overcome the hardships she has experienced in her life. She is enjoying her job and we are incredibly excited for her.

Your donations enabled 27 survivors in Central and South America to start vocational training, college, or trade school in the month of January. “This is what happiness feels like,” said “Stella”, one of the survivors who is starting college. “Cynthia” was rescued in an operation late last year. She said, “I never thought I would be free. I thought I would die while being trafficked. God sent a team to rescue me and I am not taking that for granted.” She was grateful for the laptop and tuition subsidy that O.U.R. provided to support her educational goals. These survivors are so full of excitement for their future. We are inspired by their determination to reach their dreams.

When “Cristina” was a young teenager, she ran away from home. She was facing so much abuse at home that she decided she would rather leave. Since she had nowhere else to go, Cristina stayed on people’s couches who would let her in. Many of the hosts would sexually assault and exploit her in order for her to be allowed to stay. A few years later Cristina was rescued from her situation by local law enforcement and placed in one of O.U.R.’s partnering aftercare homes in South America, where the O.U.R. Aftercare team has visited and gotten to know Cristina well. Just as she turned 18, a member of the community offered to adopt her. She was incredibly excited to be a part of this loving family. O.U.R. Aftercare continues to support Cristina and provide follow-up care as she works hard to reach her hopes and dreams. She has a desire to finish high school, go to college, and pursue a career as a lawyer. This has been more of a challenge due to the pandemic this past year, however, your donations helped us provide Cristina with access to online vocational training and classes and a laptop. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes!

“Mother Martha” (pictured here) lived through 20 years of many personal challenges. Even though she experienced the injustice of slavery in the Mediterranean, she has always fought for the freedom of others. She selflessly helped so many other women escape from being exploited. Last month, she was able to return home to her home country in East Africa as a free woman. O.U.R. Aftercare met her at the airport and helped her set up her new home. We were excited to introduce her to our aftercare partners in East Africa, and once they met her she became family for life. Mother Martha is a modern hero. This is one of several stories of freedom from the month of January 2021. In our newest blog post, we have outlined 31 stories, events, and partnerships that happened in the first 31 days of this year. These stories include a 7-year-old and 17-year-old being rescued in South Asia, 28 women returning home to family after being forced into domestic servitude in the Mediterranean, new aftercare partners in the U.S., 15 survivors starting vocational training in South America, and much more. We are incredibly grateful to our supporters and donors who made this work possible. #SURVIVORUPDATE: When McKenzie’s town in East Africa went into lockdown due to the pandemic, the schools closed, and she was unable to continue teaching. O.U.R. provided some financial support, and "McKenzie" began finding creative ways to earn money. McKenzie first started offering to wash her neighbors’ clothes. However, carrying the heavy loads of laundry caused her considerable back pain, so she started looking for a new entrepreneurial venture. With her sister, McKenzie was able to gather some capital to start a baby shoe business. They make the shoes by hand, which is difficult work, but McKenzie says it’s all worth it to provide for her family. The pandemic has brought new challenges for McKenzie, but she continues to maintain a positive outlook. Just recently, her son, who is now 13-years-old, was able to return to school “Even though times are hard, I still have to praise God for the big things and the little things,” McKenzie said. We are inspired by McKenzie’s passion and commitment to provide for her family and to continue forward despite challenges. We are grateful for the opportunity to support survivors like McKenzie through their journeys. Visit our link in profile to read Mckenzie's full story.

#BREAKINGNEWS: With the support of the O.U.R. Ops Team, Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) just seized about a half a million files of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), the largest amount ever seized in Thailand at one time. The O.U.R. Ops Team accompanied law enforcement on the raid of the child modeling agency where the material was found and assisted with the on-site investigation of the digital evidence. The main person at the agency was arrested and charged with “downloading pornographic material onto a computer system for online dissemination, molestation of minors under 13 years of age, sexual assault and separating minors from their parents for sexual purposes.” (thaipbsworld.com) More details on this 8 month long investigation coming soon. See our link in profile for the full news story.

“Megan” was offered a job as a waitress in a nearby country, so she traveled there for her new job. Upon arrival, she realized that the job was not what she thought it was. She was exploited in a local brothel and her traffickers made it very difficult for her to escape. However, one day, she saw an opportunity to run away and took it. She ran to the police and reported what was happening to her. The police in South America passed this information up to a human trafficking unit, who asked the O.U.R. Ops Team to help investigate the case. They wanted our operators to find out who the trafficker was and if she was selling more girls. In this pre-op investigation, the O.U.R. Ops Team was able to locate the woman who was trafficking girls for sex. During Operation Vallis Liberandum, law enforcement arrested 12 traffickers and identified two additional survivors who were being exploited. O.U.R. Aftercare has been in contact with these two survivors to ensure they receive proper survivor care and any resources they need. Because of Megan’s bravery, these survivors are now also free.

In Iowa, internet crimes against children have increased 1,200% since 2008 (KWWL.com). To better investigate these crimes, local law enforcement agencies in Iowa have teamed up with K9 Mousse, an electronic detection dog sponsored by O.U.R. K9 Mousse is specially trained to identify the scent of chemicals used in electronic storage devices such as SIM cards, thumb drives, hard drives, etc. K9 Mousse is used approximately 3 times a week visiting different agencies. Recently K9 Mousse helped on a search warrant that led to the arrest of a predator! "A terabyte of storage can hold 200-300,000 images, and if you think about that, each image [can be] a victim," said Todd Jordan, who has trained about 45 electronic detection K9s, including K9 Mousse. Additionally, law enforcement often bring the dogs when interviewing children or conducting search warrants where children are present. The dogs can help calm children and provide emotional support during difficult interviews. Visit the link in our profile for the full KWWL article.

It was an honor for the O.U.R. Aftercare Team to serve alongside incredible teams in Tampa this weekend for street outreach. Anti-trafficking organizations fight to combat human trafficking not only during the Super Bowl, but year round. Empowering people to be free from exploitation is never a one-time event. However, what we saw this weekend was survivor-led outreach, local and national nonprofits offering long-term, holistic aftercare, and law enforcement working in unity to help everyone live in freedom. One of the young women we met with was pregnant and in need of prenatal services. She was connected with the care she needed. We met another young woman who said she was 4th generation of being trafficked. And another young woman said, “I’m being bought and sold everyday but for me this is survival.” This is why both short term and long term holistic aftercare services are so important. Everyone has different needs and meeting people where they are with love, compassion and support is life-changing for many who are being exploited. We were honored to serve alongside @fldreamcenter @selahfreedom @empoweredtochangeint @rahabsdaughters, and we are grateful to be supporting partners of @its_apenalty’s awareness work this weekend.

Is the Super Bowl the largest day of sex trafficking? There are no statistics to prove that. Traffickers know they can make a profit during any event where large groups gather, such as sporting events or conferences, so they raise their prices. Cases of exploitation and trafficking can spike when large numbers of buyers are in one place. That’s why anti-trafficking organizations join forces to spread awareness in a host city, and local law enforcement gear up to conduct large sting operations.  Using large sporting events as a platform for awareness is an opportunity to educate the community on how they can join the fight every day.  We partner with organizations like @its_apenalty because we agree that "sports brings people together”. Let’s remember to keep spreading awareness after tomorrow and beyond the Tampa Bay Area. Victims are waiting every day in every U.S. state to find their freedom.    ‘Suspect it? In the month of January, O.U.R. supported three @aim_org operations, which resulted in the arrest of 3 predators and the rescue of 16 survivors. We are honored to work with AIM, who shares our mission to bring freedom to those being exploited. We are grateful for their good work. OPERATION NEW YEAR In central Phnom Penh, Cambodia, unassuming customers at a local coffee shop did not know that there were young girls being sold for sex in the back rooms. A trafficker was using the coffee shop as a front so they could sell children behind the scenes. With O.U.R. support, our partners at AIM along with local police raided the cafe to arrest the suspect and rescue the girls who were being sold. 3 minors and 1 woman were rescued. The suspect was successfully apprehended and charged with child sex trafficking-related offenses. Enough evidence was found to shut down the business. We are grateful to our friends at AIM for providing each survivor with the aftercare they needed. OPERATION MESSENGER In this case, a woman messaged several young girls on Facebook messenger to offer them “work”. She worked hard to manipulate and convince these girls to earn money by having sex with rich men in the city. With O.U.R. support, AIM SWAT and local police arrested this woman. In the following interviews, she admitted that her motive was to make money by trafficking these girls. 9 young survivors were rescued from the situations that this woman had put them in. They are now receiving the aftercare and legal services they need to move forward. OPERATION HARBOR In Operation Harbor, covert surveillance confirmed the suspicion that a minor was being sold in a brothel outside of Phnom Penh. With O.U.R. support, AIM SWAT and local police helped rescue the minor and two other women from the brothel. Enough evidence was found to immediately close the business. The suspect was arrested and is awaiting trial. All of the survivors are receiving aftercare and AIM’s legal team will represent all of the survivors in the upcoming court proceedings.

Fifteen-year-old "Ditya" lived with her family in a South Asian district locally known for being a trafficking hub. Her family left her and her twelve-year-old brother to work long hours cooking and cleaning at a hotel. If Ditya made a mistake, the hotel owner would physically harm her, leaving scars. On multiple occasions, hotel guests served her alcohol before sexually abusing her. An outreach worker from one of O.U.R.'s aftercare partner organizations learned about Ditya and her brother and coordinated with local police to rescue them. Ditya was placed in a home for girls run by our aftercare partner, and her brother was placed in a home for boys run by another trusted organization. At the aftercare home, Ditya continues to receive medical treatment and psychological counseling to overcome her physical and emotional wounds.

K9 Spike of Pennsylvania assisted neighboring law enforcement agencies with the investigation of a local teacher in December. While executing a search warrant, they found two USB thumb drives that contained hundreds of images and videos of child sexual abuse and other obscene sexual material. This discovery led to the arrest of Jaime Chorba, age 44, who is now facing multiple charges for possessing and disseminating child sexual abuse material. K9 Spike is one of 15 dogs sponsored by O.U.R. to identify electronic storage devices that are easily hidden by child predators. In the past two years, our K9s found evidence to help in the arrest of almost 250 predators and the identification of over 60 survivors. Visit the link in our profile for the full news story.
