“Mateo” told us that when he was being sexually exploited and trafficked, he did not know what he wanted in life. “I did not understand how valuable I am as a human being,” he said. Mateo was rescued in 2014 in one of O.U.R.’s first operations in South America. The O.U.R. Ops Team went undercover and worked with the police to help free Mateo and others. After that day, Mateo went to our partnering aftercare home and attended hair and makeup school. After earning his license, he worked at a high-end salon. Mateo is a very talented hairstylist and makeup artist. O.U.R. Aftercare has continued to walk alongside Mateo throughout the years. “O.U.R. was the one who gave me the opportunity to rescue myself and give me the help to be a free person. A new person,” he said. Mateo is now starting his own business. This is a recent picture of Mateo doing someone’s hair for their wedding day. This incredible survivor is making other people’s dreams come true!

The O.U.R. Ops Team assisted Haitian law enforcement in an investigation to find and arrest a suspected trafficker, who was a local mechanic and also had a job driving kids to school. Local authorities received word that this man was allegedly abusing children and selling them to other men in the area. The O.U.R. Ops Team was requested to help gather intelligence. Once they collected enough evidence, police officers arrested the trafficker in his garage. Two sisters were identified during this investigation as victims of this trafficker. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate whether the trafficker had been abusing any more children.

Earlier this month, it came to law enforcement’s attention that an 18-year-old girl in Colorado was being photographed and filmed in her bedroom from a hidden camera. K9 ASCII, an O.U.R.-sponsored K9, assisted on a search warrant at the residence of this teenage girl. During the search, K9 ASCII stopped and indicated on a functioning wall outlet. Upon further examination of the wall outlet, law enforcement removed the cover and observed blinking lights coming from the back out the outlet inside the wall. When they pulled the outlet out there was a device wired into the outlet which had a wireless antenna and micro SD card slot. Upon closer investigation, they realized that the device utilized the bottom neutral line as a spot for the camera lenses. “This was a huge win for our team here, Jordan Detection K9, and Operation Underground Railroad.” - Matt Beers, Investigator/ Digital Forensic Examiner, and K9 ASCII’s Handler We are grateful for K9 ASCII’s skills and assistance in investigations like this to help further protect our children and youth.

❌ Male victims of trafficking are frequently controlled through false promises, and labour related methods such as withholding of earnings and excessive working hours. (CTDC) “Danny”, a 23-year-old male, was trafficked for labor in the United States. He is from Central America and grew up very poor, so when he was offered a job as a day cook in the United States, he was very excited. The company paid for him to travel to the United States and start his job. Upon arriving at the restaurant, the company confiscated his passport. They forced him to work around the clock. They threatened him with deportation and witheld his pay. This was a very traumatizing place to be in, especially because Danny did not speak any English. Labor traffickers often use this to their advantage, because even if Danny wanted to escape, he would have a difficult time navigating where to go due to the language barrier. A few months ago, Danny was identified and freed from his situation by local law enforcement. O.U.R. Aftercare was brought on to help coordinate his trip home, along with continual survivor care once he arrived home. Danny was looking forward to going home, but had some difficulty with his flights. Delayed COVID tests and delayed flights made it difficult for Danny to travel home in a timely manner. For his final flight, the airline was extremely helpful and attentive to help Danny navigate where he needed to go. He was incredibly grateful when his flight finally hit the ground in his home country. O.U.R. Aftercare partners met Danny at the airport and coordinated plans with his family. O.U.R. Aftercare has continued to walk alongside Danny as he works to overcome his experiences and make a safe, sustainable income. Thanks to your donations, we have provided Danny with access to online vocational training opportunities and a bike to help him get to work. We are continuing to work with his family to support them during this time of healing.

On Jon and Tara Bigler's wall sits a full picture frame of kids of all ages and backgrounds. This collage includes all of the kids they’ve welcomed into their home for varying amounts of time. Ranging from newborn babies to older teenagers, Jon and Tara have fostered and cared for a total of 16 children in their home! About 6 years ago, they prepared to welcome twin girls. They baked cookies, washed bedding and made beds, ran to Target to get them their own stuffed animal, everything they could think of to provide comfort for the girls who had just been through a very difficult day. The twins never left the Bigler’s home, after four and a half years, they were officially adopted and a part of the Bigler family. The Biglers’ hearts extend even beyond those 16 kids. For four years, they lived in-house and served as “home parents” in a residential youth treatment center. In total, Jon and Tara have cared for 108 kids. Jon and Tara do not pretend that being foster parents is easy, but the positive parts of it have been more rewarding than they could have ever expected. It gives them a higher purpose and meaning to their lives, knowing they are making a difference by simply being a loving heart for someone who needs it. Research has shown that traffickers target children with increased vulnerabilities (NCOSE). These vulnerabilities may include a history of running away, childhood sexual abuse, significant substance abuse issues, or living with someone with significant substance abuse issues, and more. Many children in the U.S. foster care system identify with one or more of these situations. We invite you to read the inspiring full story of the Bigler family, including a reunion with one of their foster daughters, ways to get involved, and more, on our blog. (See link in bio!)

With the invitation of law enforcement in Southeast Asia, O.U.R. Operators worked on a human trafficking case that was identified on Twitter. Multiple underage boys were identified as possible victims of human trafficking as a known suspect was found to be selling them online. Members of the O.U.R. Aftercare Team and the local police were on scene as undercover O.U.R. Operators made contact with the suspected trafficker. A deal was made with the trafficker and soon after, a young boy was dropped off at the predetermined location. The survivor was identified as a victim of human trafficking and was rescued from ever having to be sold again. On this same night, O.U.R. Aftercare also provided assistance and support to 4 other young male survivors from a separate operation that O.U.R. did not assist in.

An American woman had been married to her husband for nineteen years when he forced her into sex trafficking. They were in a low-income situation and one day he told her that she needed to sell herself on the streets in order to pay their rent. He was both physically and verbally abusive. He locked her out of the house and said she wasn’t allowed to come back until she made enough rent money from selling herself for sex. It broke her heart. She didn’t understand why her husband was telling her to do this. She was confused why this man who said he loved her would force her to sell herself on the streets. Extremely heart-broken, she went to the streets. When she had made enough money, she brought it back to him. He called her horrible names and told her to get back out there and make more. He said that she didn’t make enough. ❌ An estimated 4.8 million people are trapped in forced sexual exploitation globally. (ILO) January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month. With your support, we can spread awareness and take steps to #endhumantrafficking. Visit ourrescue.org/training to take our free online training to recognize and report the signs.

❌ What does it look like to be trafficked for labor or domestic servitude? ⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ "McKenzie" finds an ad on social media for high-paying work abroad. She applies, is hired, and receives travel plans from the employer. ⠀ ⠀ 2️⃣ Flies to the Mediterranean, upon arrival employment agency takes passport.⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣ Forced to work 16-18 hours/day with little to eat. She starts to break dishes because of lack of energy. She is beaten. She’s not allowed to leave. ⠀ ⠀ 4️⃣ McKenzie realizes the gravity of her situation when the lady of the house tells her that she was “purchased”. ⠀ ⠀ 5️⃣ There’s a language barrier. She only speaks English. She holds back tears as she’s being yelled at in a foreign language. ⠀ ⠀ 6️⃣ She is raped by guests of the house. Physical and sexual exploitation worsens. Cannot contact her family or anyone for help. ⠀ ⠀ 7️⃣ McKenzie escapes to live on the street. She is arrested for not having her passport or documents. Employer lies and tells police that she has committed a crime. She has no rights or legal representation. ⠀ ⠀ 8️⃣ In-country O.U.R. Aftercare contractor visits jail and discovers McKenzie. Aftercare provides food + hygiene items and works out paperwork needs with police and jail in person. ⠀ ⠀ 9️⃣ McKenzie receives notice that she can fly home. O.U.R. buys her flight home and police drive her to the airport, where the Aftercare contractor meets her there. ⠀ ⠀ 🔟 O.U.R. 14-year-old “Alina” grew up in a family of six in South Asia. Her family owns some land, but it does not allow them to grow enough food for the entire year, leaving them very poor and often hungry. ⠀ ⠀ Alina has not been to school yet because of her family’s poor economic situation. One day she began walking to her sister’s house, but in the middle of the road, a few boys came and pulled her inside a nearby house. Forcing and pulling from the road is very common in her village according to Alina. In their culture, when girls are pulled into a boy’s house, it is considered forced marriage. Alina kept denying the marriage, but all of the villagers kept telling her that she has to face it and needs to accept it. Alina was just 14 and she was married. Her “husband” was unemployed and was alcoholic. He beat her daily. The father-in-law and mother-in-law would also beat her after consumption of alcohol. ⠀ ⠀ A trafficker in the village knew that Alina was not happy about the marriage and that she was facing physical abuse, so he decided to take advantage of the situation. He convinced her to run away from the house. ⠀ ⠀ Alina’s family contacted law enforcement and O.U.R.’s aftercare partners for help, as Alina was now completely missing. As these teams dove into the investigation, they were able to find Alina just as the trafficker was transferring her to a neighboring country. She was rescued just in time. ⠀ ⠀ As Alina begins the healing process from the trauma that she faced, she is living in an O.U.R.-funded aftercare home for the time being. She is receiving professional counseling, food, clothing, and her health needs are being addressed. ⠀ ⠀ She is in the process of starting school. Most recently she was excited to celebrate the holidays with the other girls in the aftercare home. ⠀ ⠀ She was recently able to go on a community outing with the other survivors. She said, “Now I am living the life which I wanted to live since the beginning, I always wanted to go to school and continue my education. I want to become a successful person in life, I can do it, and I feel like I am living my dream.” ⠀ ⠀

❌ Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) depicts children of all ages, boys and girls, and differs in level of severity of the abuse ranging from children posing to gross assault. (ECPAT.org) Child predators are no longer limited to one geographical location or audience. The exploitation and abuse can be broadcast to thousands of online devices across the world. Behind every child sexual abuse photo or video is a heinous crime being committed against a child. 📲 Recently, the O.U.R. Ops Team assisted foreign law enforcement partners in Nepal with an investigation into a Facebook group where CSAM was being shared. In addition to identifying the predator who was sharing the exploitative material, 3 females and 2 males under 13 years old in Nepal were identified who were being abused and exploited by this group. Anytime a child is identified, steps are immediately taken to provide the necessary aftercare services. 🐶 In addition to O.U.R. Operators assisting in investigations internationally, O.U.R. supports over a dozen K9's in the U.S. that help sniff out electronic storage devices during search warrants. Often child predators will hide SD cards or USBs full of CSAM in their homes, making it difficult for the police to find the evidence quickly. These K9's are trained to sniff out these electronic devices quickly, which helps law enforcement prosecute the child predators. See our link in profile for more information about how to appropriately report CSAM.

❌ In a recent NCMEC analysis of CyberTipline reports of online enticement, it was found that nearly all the children did NOT know the person they were communicating with online. (NCMEC) 9-year-old “Ava” started chatting with a boy online who seemed to be very nice and only a few years older than her. Ava grew up in an abusive environment in her home in Central America, so she turned to social media to find connection and friends. After Ava and this boy had developed a little relationship online, the boy asked for explicit pictures of her. She replied to his request. After she sent the first picture, the boy on the other end of the chat revealed who he truly was: a 70-year-old man in Florida. “If you don’t send me more pictures, I will post these publicly and send them to everyone you know.” At only 9 years old, Ava felt like she had no other choice. She complied with his requests and sent him the pictures he wanted. Unfortunately, he uploaded the pictures of Ava online anyway. This predator, miles and miles away from this little girl, was still able to exploit her repeatedly. Law enforcement found the pictures that the man had uploaded and worked to identify and rescue Ava. Not only was she being exploited online, but she was being continually abused by close family members. She was placed in an aftercare home that O.U.R. supports in Central America. Healing is not a linear process. This man in Florida has made Ava’s life incredibly difficult. We are in awe of Ava’s strength and determination, and O.U.R. Aftercare will continue to stand by her and support her on her healing journey. There are thousands of predators online looking for vulnerable children to exploit. Visit our link in profile for 5 resources to help you navigate conversations with children, friends, and family about staying safe online.

❌ Child sex trafficking refers to the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a minor for the purpose of a commercial sex act. (justice.gov) ❌ Pimps and traffickers sexually exploit children through street prostitution, and in adult night clubs, illegal brothels, sex parties, motel rooms, hotel rooms, and other locations throughout the United States. (justice.gov) 🏫 When children are trafficked, their trafficker may keep them in their regular routine of attending school and going home at night. In other situations, these kids completely miss out on receiving an education altogether. Rachel (name changed) was trafficked here in the U.S. when she was 14 years old by a man that she believed to be her boyfriend. Under the impression that he loved her, she was excited when he suggested that they plan a vacation together. When they arrived in a nearby state, the “boyfriend” immediately turned on her. He demanded that she work the streets in order to pay for her portion of the vacation. Luckily, an undercover police officer identified Rachel and helped her out of her situation. She was traumatized from being trafficked and faced many challenges, including her mental health, dealing with her dysfunctional family, and financial issues. Currently, O.U.R. Aftercare is providing support and consultation to Rachel’s team who is helping her improve her mental health and helping her recover from addiction. We are grateful to support strong survivors like Rachel. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month. We all have different ways of celebrating the beginning of a new year. For many children, the holidays are very difficult. While no one can completely take away the pain as someone heals from human trafficking, we can all do our best to help create more positive memories in the midst of healing. This past weekend, The O.U.R. Aftercare Team helped by sponsoring a meal for 58 survivors. KFC is the meal the girls wanted to ring in 2021! From our hearts to yours, thank you for helping create positive memories for children as they are healing in aftercare! #happynewyear

We are excited to share about one of O.U.R.’s aftercare partners in South Asia. Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to support an amazing survivor-founded aftercare home. We support 10 girls there in various ways, including: LEGAL SUPPORT: After three girls were recently rescued from being sold in a hotel, they were supported in the process to file the case. They will receive any continued support needed during legal proceedings, as one of the perpetrators is now behind bars and another is being investigated.  COUNSELING: All 10 girls have access to a professionally-trained psychological counselor.  EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT: Many of these survivors were forced into exploitation at an early age and did not attend school during that time. These girls have access to a tutor so they can be prepared to continue their formal education once they are ready.  COVID-19 RELIEF: With appropriate safety measures in place, these survivors were able to spend some time in nature after being quarantined for some time. This time outside was very rejuvenating for these girls.  We are grateful to partner with quality, in-country aftercare programs who are familiar with the culture and needs of the survivors in their area. Thank you for your continued support which has made a difference in the lives of these 10 girls.

O.U.R.-sponsored Electronic Detection K9s have been covering ground all over the United States! K9 Lucy from Arkansas, Frankie from California, and Sota from Minnesota have contributed to great successes this past month.  In Arkansas, K9 Lucy assisted on four search warrants that led to the arrest of 4 suspects. K9 Frankie in California also helped on 4 search warrants that led to the arrest of 4 suspects.
Minnesota's K9 Sota found a cell phone that would have otherwise been missed by investigators. In total last month, K9 Sota helped find evidence in investigations that resulted in 3 arrests.
These K9s are trained to retrieve vital evidence during search warrants and their work helps lead to successful convictions of child sex predators!
