April is #ChildAbusePreventionMonth, which gives communities and families the opportunity to work together to prevent child abuse and neglect. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) defines child abuse as (at minimum): Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; or an act or failure to act, which presents an imminent risk of serious harm. The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 recently added the requirement to include sex trafficking victims in the definition of child abuse and neglect (Src: 2019 Child Maltreatment Report). As of a few years ago, sex trafficking was added as a maltreatment type included in reports to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS).
