THE BOY IN THE GREEN SHIRT PART 3/5 I stared at Simon’s face for about 2 months while we did everything we possibly could to identify him. We studied and researched the clothing company of the green shirt he was seen wearing. We reviewed every single modeling/photoshoot for that clothing company which included thousands of photos of child models. None of them were Simon. My entire team of O.U.R. Operators poured over every single detail in the photos of Simon, including imperfections in the office furniture, visible paint spatter from one of the walls being recently repainted, and manufacturing details in the window frame behind the bed. Nothing pointed to this kid. But after integrating into the offender’s personal and online life, and into his inner-circle of friends, we finally found Simon. But we didn’t only find Simon. We found so much more. Law enforcement investigators were able to use the information provided by O.U.R. and they tracked down that exact window frame and bedroom with the same paint spatter on the floor. And the same computer desk. Actually, they found the exact room where Simon was sexually abused when he was 6 years old. They found not only Simon, but over 50 other local children that were systematically befriended, groomed, and sexually abused not only by the offender who abused Simon, but by many people within the offender’s inner circle of friends. Simon’s abuser is sitting in a prison as we speak. Part 4 coming soon. See the “SIMON” Instagram highlight for parts 1 & 2.

Happy #BlackFriday! Use the code THANKS20 to take 20% off everything on our online store. (Link in profile!) All proceeds support the cause. ⠀ ⠀ The above Find Gardy hat by @stelehats was inspired by 3-year-old Gardy, who was kidnapped and sold by traffickers. O.U.R.’s first operation was in Haiti to try and find this little boy. ⠀ ⠀ Although Gardy still has not been found, his story has taught us how to find the light and hope in the darkness. Since that operation in 2014, we have helped rescue many children who would have not been found if it were not for our search for Gardy. ⠀ ⠀ The white speckles found on the crown and bill of the hat represent stars in the sky. These stars represent survivors not yet rescued. They also represent the supporters aiming to end all human trafficking. ⠀ ⠀ (Picture credit: @jadarashawn @sara_ourbestbites @mymommystyle)

THE BOY IN THE GREEN SHIRT PART 2/5 (see our Instagram story highlights for part 1) On the very first art lesson with the offender, it was clear that he had direct access to multiple underage victims who were often seen at his home playing, swimming, and hanging out. Walking away from the offender’s house following my first art lesson, leaving behind 2 young neighborhood boys who had come to swim with the offender was difficult, to say the least.      I began by booking the offender for drawing lessons since he was advertising these services via his social media profile. After sitting through multiple art lessons, the offender began bringing an underage boy with him to the lessons, whom he described as a close neighborhood friend.   Shortly after this meeting, the offender and I became friends on social media. The offender was seen to be heavily involved in the acting/modeling industry with contacts with agents and photographers. A pattern began to emerge where the offender would befriend a potential victim, encourage him and his family members to pursue acting/modeling, and then use his connections to book casting calls, photoshoots, etc. Once the victim and his family began trusting the offender, he would begin having unsupervised contact with the victim. All of the children that the offender was seen interacting with in this manner were young boys between the ages of 6-10 years old.    Once we became friends on Facebook, it didn’t take long to find the boy in the green shirt. This boy, like many others who had unfortunately crossed paths with this offender, had been victimized and exploited while being left unsupervised with him during photoshoots and casting calls across the city. The boy in the green shirt is “Simon”.  Part 3 coming soon.

Although kidnappings do occur, several studies show that the more common, pervasive method that traffickers use is psychological abuse or manipulation. According to a study by Thorn, sex trafficking of those that are younger than 10 years old when they entered the life is perpetrated almost exclusively by family members, often a father or stepfather. The Counter Trafficking Data Collaborative, a global data hub on human trafficking, shows that over 40% of trafficked children are victimized by family, a friend, or an intimate partner. We want to be clear that it is very important to be aware of all danger, however, the specific crime of human trafficking more often tied to grooming and manipulation rather than abduction. Most traffickers are already known to their victims, either through family, friends, or online communications. It is not uncommon for a trafficker to present themselves as a prospective love interest, gaining the victim’s adoration, affection, and trust, before eventually exposing them to the horrors of their sinister intentions. A trafficker also may prey on economic vulnerabilities and offer a job opportunity or provide gifts. With this trust in place, the use of physical force isn’t always necessary. Many children and youth may still attend school or live at home while being exploited. Learn more about the signs of human trafficking at ourrescue.org/training #KnowTheSigns #ourrescue

A 13-year-old girl was sold and sexually exploited inside this bar. It was suspected that more young girls were being exploited inside. We are so grateful to have partnered with @aim_org to launch a successful operation with local law enforcement. 5 survivors were rescued, 3 of which were minors. It was found that the bar manager and 2 other suspects were profiting off of selling young girls to customers, mostly foreigners, in the bar. 3 suspects were arrested during the op and charged with child sex trafficking related offenses. Thanks to AIM, all of the survivors are receiving survivor care and beginning their healing process. See link in profile for full story.

William (name changed for protection) has been a member of the O.U.R. Ops Team for over 3 years, and has over 14 years of experience. He specializes in undercover work, tactical operations, and child exploitation investigations. In a recent interview, William explained how important it is for O.U.R. Operators to recognize signs of mental distress or burnout in themselves or other team members. Every 5 operations, our operators undergo a mandatory psychological evaluation. They are also rotated frequently so they are not subjected to seeing the same heinous situations too much. Many of the O.U.R. Operators have worked in law enforcement or the military, and have a lot of experience in dealing with homicide, child crimes, and/or sex crimes. They look out for each other’s health as they work to rescue more children from the harmful sexual predators. “It’s similar to a special operations team within either law enforcement or the military where there’s that special bond [between operators],” William said. “You gain appreciation for each other and the work that you’re doing, so I would say there’s definitely a friendship that extends past specific operations.”

WHO IS THE BOY IN THE GREEN SHIRT? - PART 1 The “Boy in the Green Shirt” was an investigation that started in Southeast Asia after the police in another country found photos of an unidentified young boy in a green shirt being sexually assaulted. The offender had unique, identifiable physical traits, so local police were able to quickly identify a citizen with matching traits to this alleged offender. They requested the support of the O.U.R. Ops Team to gather additional intelligence which may help find the young boy in the green shirt. The O.U.R. Ops Team quickly determined that the offender was heavily involved in activities which provided him unsupervised contact with young children, such as giving art lessons and music lessons. It was decided that an O.U.R. Operator would go undercover to befriend the offender. The O.U.R. Operator began integrating himself into the life of the offender by booking him for drawing lessons, which would initially take place at the offender’s home. I’m the O.U.R. Undercover Operator who befriended this offender, integrated my undercover identity into his life, and eventually gained access to not only his inner-circle of friends but to the boy in the green shirt. I will be telling this story firsthand. Part 2 coming soon.

“It once took 22 days to rescue a 14-year-old girl who called us from a brothel asking for our help. When we finally got to her, we learned she had been trafficked 198 times in those 22 days. So we started our own SWAT Team so we never have to wait that long again to rescue girls like her. She is now a social worker on our SWAT Team fighting to save others from the same evil that once enslaved her.” – @aim_org O.U.R. is honored to partner with Agape International Missions (AIM) and support their amazing work in Cambodia. There are many approaches to ending the evil of human trafficking and there are many amazing organizations around the world tackling different aspects of the problem. When we come together to fight, we are even stronger. That’s why AIM and O.U.R. have teamed up for the past 5 years, working to rescue and heal survivors and bring justice to the traffickers. AIM and O.U.R. work together when possible, sharing resources and information. This cooperation helps us to catch and arrest more traffickers while rescuing more men, women, and children. The AIM team provides quality survivor care and free legal support to survivors after they are rescued. Together, we have rescued over 700 children from slavery and arrested over 200 traffickers!

“I am strong because I tell the cops about the other girls who are being hurt like I was. I can’t leave them there.” - Sabrina, 8 years old. Sabrina’s testimony in court led the police in Central America to be able to find 3 other survivors who were being exploited, ages 10, 12, and 13. Sabrina’s testimony also helped police find 2 American predators who were living in the country and who were unknown to the police up until that point. All of these survivors are now safe and receiving survivor care. Our team calls Sabrina “Little Wonder Woman” because of her immense courage and bravery. One small, but courageous voice led to the liberation of more survivors. We are 3 weeks away from Giving Tuesday, and we have some exciting surprises! Stay tuned.

With support and resources from O.U.R., the Mesa Police Department @mesaazpd arrested 3 predators and rescued 3 survivors in three different operations. In one of the operations, a 37-year-old man named Jason Vangundy was arrested for trafficking a 16 and 17 year old he connected with through social media. He was recently indicted on charges including child sex trafficking, money laundering, and sexual conduct with a minor (he allegedly violated the 16 year old girl). After meeting these girls online, Vangundy provided them with a place to live, cell phones, and taught them how to sell themselves online. Child sex trafficking is happening here in America, in places like the Phoenix area. We are incredibly grateful to support operations like these to help rescue and protect more children and youth from being exploited. See link in profile for the news story.

9-year-old “Ava” started chatting with a boy online who seemed to be very nice and only a few years older than her. Ava grew up in an abusive environment in her home in Central America, so she turned to social media to find connection and friends. After Ava and this boy had developed a little relationship online, the boy asked for explicit pictures of her. She replied to his request. After she sent the first picture, the boy on the other end of the chat revealed who he truly was: a 70-year-old man in Florida. “If you don’t send me more pictures, I will post these publicly and send them to everyone you know.” At only 9 years old, Ava felt like she had no other choice. She complied with his requests and sent him the pictures he wanted. Unsurprisingly, he uploaded the pictures of Ava online anyway. This predator, miles and miles away from this little girl, was still able to exploit her repeatedly. Law enforcement found the pictures that the man had uploaded and worked to identify and rescue Ava. Not only was she being exploited online, but she was being continually abused by close family members. She was placed in an aftercare home that O.U.R. supports in Central America. Last month, the O.U.R. Aftercare Team joined Ava and the other survivors in the home for Ava’s quinceaƱera. They enjoyed food and music together. Ava had many ups and downs that day as she processed getting older and remembering all that she had been through. Healing is not a linear process. This man in Florida has made Ava’s life incredibly difficult. We are in awe of Ava’s strength and determination, and O.U.R. Aftercare will continue to stand by her and support her on her healing journey.

"Having the aftercare team with us after an operation is vital to our mission. When we begin working a case with law enforcement we envision the moment we will have all the evidence we need for the traffickers to be arrested and the survivors to receive all the care they need. By having aftercare as part of our crucial team, we can provide assistance immediately. ⠀ ⠀ I recall an investigation in Latin America where a young victim was identified and rescued. As operators we maintained our undercover role and could not reveal that we were the good guys working with those there to help them. I learned later of the progress this young lady had made after the operation and credit the success due to our aftercare team continually following up with her. As I learned this information, it made all of our sacrifices worth it, to know a precious soul had been located. It solidified why we place ourselves in dark environments so we can guide others towards the light. Without aftercare, many children could be lost in the darkness." - O.U.R. Operator

She stands at her toy kitchen set and pours something when her mom pours something, cuts something when her mom cuts something. “I’m helping my mom. I’m going to own a restaurant like my mom one day,” she said. Norah is a survivor of trafficking. After taking a 12-week business course offered to survivors by one of O.U.R.’s aftercare partners, she courageously started a restaurant in Central America. Not only did this 12-week business class affect Norah’s life, but it also affected her daughter’s life. Norah endured many years of abuse from her husband and father. But Norah is working to break the chain. She is empowering her daughter by working hard at her restaurant, providing memories that her daughter will take with her for the rest of her life.

“I am proud to be working towards being a social worker. I want to heal others the same way I was healed.” - Debbie, Age 16. In many of our partnering aftercare homes around the world, survivors love to come back and mentor their younger peers. This turns into a beautiful healing experience for many when they can relate to each other and feel mutually understood. We are continually amazed by the strength of survivors to persevere through the hard moments and to look to the future with hope. As we enter the season of gratitude and Thanksgiving, we are excited to be sharing more survivor stories with you in the coming weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday, December 1st.
